July library notes

Kids of all ages are encouraged to participate in our summer reading program, Starship Adventures at your library.  Kids can keep track of what they read and Kenn at the Monterey General Store has again generously offered ice cream cones to those children who read the required amount.  This program is sponsored by the Monterey Library, the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems, the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and the Monterey General Store! Come in starting July 1st and sign up!

We are again offering programming for children on Saturday mornings at 10:30, starting July 11 and running through August 15.  Check the schedule in the calendar section of the news!  Thanks to the Library Trustees and the  Monterey Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported  by the Massachusetts Cultural Council,  for supporting these programs.

On Monday July 13th at 7PM we will be hosting a poetry sharing event suitable for the whole family.  If you have  a poem you wrote, for yourself, publication,  or even for school, and would like to share it, please come!

Please remember our annual booksale on Saturday July 25th.  The Friends of the Monterey Library will there to help us out and to help prepare the garden tour(see the news items by the Friends and by Myrna Rosen).  Please note that as of July 11 the library won’t accept any donations for the booksale—we need some time to sort and prepare.  If you can’t get them your donations in by that date please wait until after this year’s sale to bring them to the library.

Usually holds on CWMARS are easy and fast, especially now that we have two deliveries every week.  Occasionally the hold remains unfilled for quite some time.  If the book is new and popular that may be because the  demand exceeds the supply, but if the item isn’t newly released the hold could have been dropped by the system.  If you have questions about any holds, or would like to check the status of something, don’t hesitate to ask.  We can redo the hold and get that item for you.  If you notice that the hold hasn’t come in two weeks let us know.

The library is a WIFI hot spot through a DSL connection. The network ID is Monterey Library, and no web key is needed. It is available in the center of town 24/7
The Monterey Library opened in May 1891, and moved to its present location, 452 Main Rd., in 1931.  We belong to the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System.   The collection consists of around 9,000 items including books, magazines, books on tape, videocassettes, and local museum passes.  We have revolving collections of adult fiction, books on tape, and videocassettes from the Region's bookmobile.  We have a local history section including town reports, a complete collection of the Monterey News, and other manuscripts and books about Monterey.  We belong to the Central Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing network(CWMARS), and anyone with a CWMARS card is welcome to use our library.  If you don't have a CWMARS card, stop in and get one so you can utilize this system that starts to the east of Worcester and goes all the way here to the New York border.  Our catalog, along with the rest of the system's, is available online at cwmars.org.  Holds and renewals may be placed online through that website.  Special programs are available throughout the year, with special emphasis on the children's summer reading program sponsored by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.   We have a public access internet terminal with printing available at .20 per page.  We also have a public copier that costs .15 per page.  The last Saturday of July is our used book sale and donations are welcomed.
