Minutes of Local Historic District Committee

February 4, 2021

  1. What is lost if central Monterey does not become an Historic District ?  Buildings will be moved away or torn down and no tax incentives will be available for the businesses or endangered buildings in central Monterey
  2. Further discussion and a report on distinction between Local Historic Districts and National Register Districts uncovered gaps in our understanding.
  3. Can the Village School be designated historic in its present condition was a question that we could not answer? Anecdotal information from School Committee reports from 1858 to 1894 was introduced. Note was taken of the issue of funding regarding Select Board authorization for municipal fundraising.  General Laws Chap.44 Section 53A intro.
  4. Maureen volunteered preparation of a list of owner names and addresses for those in a proposed District.
  5. Tactics to build a Town-wide constituency for recognition of a district as historic were reviewed.
  6. There was discussion about how to apportion writing a formal report to the Town in anticipation of a Town Mtg.
