MONTEREY CULTURAL COUNCIL MINUTES 10/19/20

Attendance:

Maggie Barkin, Janet Jensen, Dorene Beller, Wendy Germain, Carole Clarin, Dennis Lynch

Wendy reported on Dennis and Elaine Lynch’s run down on the holiday lights in Monterey:

  • Select Board was asked for money for “special events” that had not been used for the Memorial Day Parade, but that money was for the previous fiscal year and, along with the Finance Committee, indicated it could not be used.

  • We have Cultural Council money in the account and the holiday lights will be a Cultural Council event.  In addition we may receive a donation from the Coffee Club.

  • The lights will be loaned to homeowners at no cost to them.

  • Dorene suggested that the lights just be within the town center.

  • Dennis indicated that money would not be given to homeowners and they could also use their own lights.

  • Maureen Banner will create postcards that can be provided to homeowners and businesses between the addresses of 409 to 474 Main Street to inform them of the event.

  • Wendy indicated that the firehouse, the library and the Monterey Community Center as well as some homeowners, will always decorate with lights.

  • Maggie asked “how can the Cultural Council help?”  She suggested that a portion of the $780 that we have can be used for a local event and will send an email to Veronica asking if we are allowed to set aside LCC money to use for this event.

  • A motion was made and accepted to set aside $500 for lights that we will purchase and they will be the property of the LCC to be used for local events.

  • Although, as Wendy said, the suggestion to light up the town came from the Monterey Community Center members, the LCC could be in charge.

  • We had a discussion about a name for the event referring to the possibilities that the MCC members suggested and agreed on “Monterey Lights the Holidays”.

  • Dennis and Elaine can post future zoom meetings on the town calendar website.  The next meeting will be Friday, October 23, 2020 at 5pm.

  • Dennis suggested purchasing only energy efficient LED lights.  White lights were recommended by Janet who also suggested stringing popcorn and cranberries.

  • The actual lighting event will take place on Saturday, November 28, 2020 and we briefly discussed the possibility of having hot cocoa at the library but no decision was made.

Grantees for LCC Funds:

  • It was suggested that we add the people on the email list of 19 grantees to apply for a “direct grant”.

  • Dorene offered to send an email to the 19 grantees.

  • Wendy explained how acceptance and rejection letters were presented in the past.  The members need to read the applications prior to our next meeting on Monday, November 30, 2020.  We are asked to sign in at 3:55pm.

  • Maggie is not certain if the state will give us $4800.

  • Janet’s Chestnut Meeting on November 27, 2020 can also be supported by the LCC.

  • The final date for turning in an application for grantees needs to be verified and then sent to Melissa Noe.

As of today the final date for applying for a grant has been postponed to December 14, 2020.
