MONTEREY CULTURAL COUNCIL MINUTES

DATE:  Tuesday, July 12, 2022, 4:00 PM

LOCATION:  Monterey Community Center

PRESENT: Janet Jensen, Maggie Barkin, Erica Stern, Stephanie Sloane, Barbara Dahlman and our state focal point Carolyn Coles (by Zoom)

DISCUSSION AND DECISIONS:

Reading of May 18 Meeting Minutes, approved with minor modifications

A round of introduction of members and guests:

  • Carolyn Coles, who is our new focal point with the Mass Culture Council
  • Barbara Dahlman, a once and prospective new member (she served many years ago)

OLD BUSINESS:

Financial Report:

  • Review of finances: Maggie reported that all grantees have now been paid, and we still have close to $1000 in reserve.

Memorial Day Parade:

  • While the MCC’s participation was noticed and noted by some, and included a photo in the Monterey News, Maggie was disappointed that the group did not show up on the official listings.
  • Maggie suggested better coordination/outreach in the future. She offered to write up monthly calendar notices for the Monterey News.
  • Janet offered to do a write up for September about the opening of the grant cycle.
  • Erica agreed to offer assistance to anyone needing help with the grant app.

What’s Happening Plans:

  • Maggie reported that six or seven people showed up for her last event and several programs are in the works.

NEW BUSINESS:

Grants:

  • There was general discussion about ways to collect community input to inform our granting priorities. As Carolyn noted, there are many approaches possible.

Community Survey:

  • We decided to put off revisiting a community survey until we could focus on it more fully.
  • Maggie is planning to devote one or two August “What’s Happenings”, in coordination with Lauren Berhman, to get input on town cultural priorities.
  • Possible contribution to 175th commemorative book for Monterey and to the Library’s children’s program were postponed since Carole was not present.
