Lake Garfield

The Lake Garfield town beach is a public beach, parking passes are not needed. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season.

Lake Garfield Working Group Mission Statement (accepted 7/18/16)

Lake Garfield is a Monterey town treasure. This committee is formed to help sustain this treasure by keeping it Healthy, Safe and Accessible. The first mission will be the Health aspect. Separate working groups shall be impaneled to address the Safety & Accessibility aspect.~

Membership for Lake Health working group: Membership shall include 1 Selectboard member, 1 Con Com member, 1 Board of Health member, 1 Parks member, 2 members of FLG, & 4 town members. This working group shall meet a minimum of once a month. Meetings are expected to begin in late summer and continue throughout the fall and winter. Members of the working group should expect to attend all meetings.

Lake Health

  • Identifying contaminants, invasive species & activities that threaten the watershed.~
  • Preventing/regulating those contaminants, invasive species~& activities from injuring the watershed.~
  • Developing strategies to combat/reverse the effects of contaminants,~invasive species~&~activities that have already damaged the watershed.
  • Investigating the need for, and development of, a Wet-lands By-Law
  • Assessing the role of enforcement (Health Dept, Building Dept, Police, Harbormaster, By-Laws, State/Town regulations)
  • Educating the public & town Government, as to the items above.

Lake Safety

  • Assessing current rules and regulations.
  • Assessing the role of enforcement (Police, Harbormaster, By-Laws, State/Town regulations)
  • Determining unsafe conditions/practices and how to prevent/combat them, using/modifying the items above.

Lake Accessibility

  • Assessing current Accessibility (Parking, Beach, Beach facilities, Boat Launch, Lake information) for towns people, beach goers, swimmers & boaters.
  • Assessing the role of enforcement (Police, Harbormaster, By-Laws, State/Town regulations)
  • Determining unsafe conditions/practices and how to prevent/combat them, using/modifying the items above.
  • Determining future needs & planning for those needs.
