Steve Called Meeting to order 7:07

The agenda for tonight:

  • Welcome Tracey Brennan as our newest Parks Commission member
  • Housekeeping
  • Ice Rink
  • Kayaks
  • Budget – January 27th meeting
  • Back Burner:  Requests for Pickle Ball Court and Outdoor Ping Pong Table (possibly with Community Center) and the Playground

Ice Rink:  Mark’s write up once approved should be posted on our website to memorialize.  Steve made a motion to put into public record once the Commission is clear on the risks and the process.  Per Mark Monterey Board of Health Agent (Jim Wildish) has approved the plan.  All thanked Mark for his efforts and setting the foundation.  Basics, the fresh air works for us if we follow these rules:

  • limit the number of people to 25 people on the ice
  • Post the number of signs indicated
  • No warming room
  • No sharing of equipment (Peter already moved the skates)
  • Masks at all times
  • Social distancing
  • Clip Board for contact tracing
  • Police Department approval

Mark commented that in the past the status of the rink was communicated through Facebook, it was the sentiment of the committee and Mark that this will be taken down.  First step is for the Parks Commission to coordinate with the Police Chief.  Depending on that outcome, we may choose to post another sign that says if you see someone not following the rules call the Police at – whatever number is agreed to 911 or on the non-emergency line.

We will list on the Parks Website the following.  Motion to proceed on the Ice Rink unanimously voted yes:

  1. Peter to reach out to the Chief to get on board and what number to use
  2. Peter to make signs
  3. Ilene will write language, send to committee for approval and then give to Melissa to post on website

Big thanks to Mark.

Kayaks: We want to address all the issues raised yesterday. Steve has consulted with Melissa and Shawn Tryon and will contact the police chief as they will need to be involved.    Ideas include:

  • Assignment of permits by lottery with dates for lottery and submission
  • One permit for family (and then more allowed if berths are still open)
  • Number on berth will respond to the craft (anyone can see if it belongs there)
  • We have two new racks with 60 potential berths
  • Clear communication plan and process for announcing lottery and communicating results

Ilene asked about the boats we seized, and Steve will also talk to Police Chief about that.

Budget: We rolled the budget from last year with a few adjustments for inflation 5% for lifeguard contracts.  We had a few COVID-19 changes.  The playground would be a matching grant situation and Steve is looking for some comparable.   There is also question about a pickleball court and if we should pursue that.  And possibly suggest an outdoor ping pong table. All agreed that we like the ping pong table idea as long as we are not in charge of usage.  Ilene recommended to start with an exiting tennis court and see if we can retrofit and rent.  Tracey suggested that we hire a weekend staff person for the beach and possibly for the ice rink. Ilene suggested we use the Senior Tax Work Off Program to fund these positions.  We could also ask about COVID-19 relief funds for these expenses as they only exist due to COVID-19. Steve will approach Melissa on how to proceed on the part-time worker suggestion, which all Commission members agreed we should pursue.

Steve closed the meeting at 8:03 pm
