Minutes of the emergency meeting of 3/13/20

Meeting Opened at: 11am

Select Board Members Present: Kenneth Basler, Chair, Donald Coburn, Steven Weisz

Also in attendance: John Szablowski, Steve Moore, Janet Jensen, Mark Makuc

The Board called this emergency meeting to discuss Monterey and our response to the Coronavirus.

Members of the Board will be participating in a conference call with the Department of Public Health today at 3pm and a meeting with our local Board of Health on Monday at 4pm.

The health and safety of our community is the highest priority. As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout the country, the Board is taking the actions to help protect the community and our employees.

Measures have been taken to ensure that employees will not be penalized for staying home if they show flu like symptoms or are required to be quarantined.

The Police and Fire Departments are following CDC guidelines and have both put in place policies to address the safety of their staff.

The Board will continue to post all updates on the website and through our email listserv; we encourage those who have not already signed up to do so on the homepage www.montereyma.gov

Don proposed that Kenn be authorized on behalf of the Board to take any executive actions necessary to avoid any other emergency meetings.  If any actions are taken Kenn will notify the other members immediately.

Mary Makuc has requested that the Board vote to close the Community Center as the population that attends is largely elderly.  The Board discussed this and voted to close the Community Center for 30 days; which will be reevaluated and extended if necessary.

Mark Makuc stated he would like to keep providing services at the library for as long as he can and intends to keep normal operating hours.  Residents that are sick but would like to check an item out can use the outdoor lockers to avoid coming in to the public area.

The Board also discussed an incident that occurred last night with the Finance Committee holding a meeting in the hall and saying derogatory things about the fire company which was overheard by the Town Clerk and Fire Chief and the possible ramifications of the incident.  Don proposed that the Board express their warm appreciation for its diligent work on providing input into the budget and they thank for that and the Board will take it all into consideration and there will be no future joint meetings with the exception of the additional meeting on borrowing with our Unibank representative.  The process this year has been challenging, the Finance Committee has been in the Board’s opinion, difficult to work with as, as Don stated, they are advisory.

A motion was made and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at: 11:58am
